When communities face floods, droughts, storms, landslides, coastal erosion, or extreme heat, the first response is often to build more infrastructure.
Higher flood walls.
Larger drainage systems.
More embankments.
More engineered defenses.
Yet many disasters continue to increase in frequency, intensity, and cost.
Why?
Because disasters are not caused solely by hazards.
They are often amplified by degraded ecosystems.
Wetlands that once absorbed floodwaters have disappeared.
Mangrove forests that protected coastlines have been cleared.
Watersheds that regulated water flows have been degraded.
Forests that stabilized slopes have been lost.
Coral reefs that reduced storm surges have been damaged.
As natural systems decline, vulnerability increases.
Communities become more exposed.
Recovery costs rise.
And resilience weakens.
This has led governments, development agencies, conservation organizations, and disaster management institutions to recognize a critical reality:
Healthy ecosystems are not merely environmental assets.
They are disaster risk reduction infrastructure.
Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) harnesses the protective functions of ecosystems to reduce hazard exposure, strengthen resilience, support adaptation, and promote sustainable development.
In this course, participants will learn how to design, implement, monitor, and scale Eco-DRR interventions that integrate ecosystem management with disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and community resilience.
And yes, we will examine why restoring a wetland can sometimes provide more sustainable flood protection than building another concrete barrier.
Disaster risks are increasing globally due to climate change, environmental degradation, urbanization, land-use change, population growth, and socioeconomic vulnerabilities. Traditional disaster risk management approaches have often emphasized structural and engineering solutions while overlooking the critical role ecosystems play in reducing risks and supporting resilience.
Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) is an approach that uses the sustainable management, conservation, restoration, and enhancement of ecosystems to reduce disaster risks and strengthen the resilience of communities and ecosystems. Eco-DRR recognizes ecosystems as natural infrastructure capable of mitigating hazards while simultaneously delivering environmental, social, and economic benefits.
Eco-DRR contributes to flood regulation, drought mitigation, erosion control, slope stabilization, storm surge protection, water security, biodiversity conservation, livelihood protection, and climate resilience. It supports integrated approaches that align disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, ecosystem management, sustainable development, and nature-based solutions.
International frameworks increasingly recognize the importance of Eco-DRR, including the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction Sendai Framework, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change adaptation agenda, the Convention on Biological Diversity Global Biodiversity Framework, and the United Nations.
This course equips participants with practical tools for assessing ecosystem services, identifying ecosystem-based risk reduction opportunities, designing interventions, engaging stakeholders, mobilizing financing, and monitoring outcomes.
Through practical exercises, field-based scenarios, risk assessments, planning workshops, and international case studies, participants will gain the skills required to implement effective Eco-DRR programs.
