Rapid urbanization, climate change, population growth, and increasing land development are intensifying flood risks in cities worldwide. Urban areas are experiencing more frequent and severe flooding due to extreme rainfall events, inadequate drainage systems, loss of natural water retention areas, expanding impermeable surfaces, and aging infrastructure. These challenges threaten public safety, economic activity, critical infrastructure, environmental quality, and long-term urban sustainability.
Traditional urban drainage systems were primarily designed to rapidly convey stormwater away from urban areas through pipes, culverts, channels, and engineered drainage networks. While these systems remain important, they are increasingly unable to cope with changing rainfall patterns, urban expansion, and climate-related hydrological extremes. In many cities, conventional drainage infrastructure alone is no longer sufficient to manage stormwater effectively or provide long-term flood resilience.
The Sponge City concept has emerged as a transformative approach to urban water management. Rather than simply draining stormwater as quickly as possible, sponge cities are designed to absorb, infiltrate, store, filter, reuse, and gradually release rainwater through integrated natural and engineered systems. This approach enhances flood resilience while simultaneously improving water quality, groundwater recharge, biodiversity, urban cooling, and overall environmental sustainability.
Sponge city principles integrate Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS), Low Impact Development (LID), Green Infrastructure, Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), and Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) to create resilient urban environments. Common interventions include permeable pavements, bioswales, rain gardens, green roofs, urban wetlands, detention basins, retention ponds, ecological corridors, infiltration systems, and smart stormwater management technologies.
As cities seek to adapt to climate change and strengthen resilience, governments, municipalities, urban planners, engineers, developers, and infrastructure agencies require specialized expertise in designing, implementing, and managing sponge city systems. Successful implementation requires multidisciplinary knowledge spanning hydrology, urban planning, environmental engineering, landscape architecture, climate adaptation, policy development, financing, and stakeholder engagement.
This course equips participants with practical and strategic expertise in designing sponge cities and resilient urban drainage systems. Participants will learn how to assess urban flood risks, develop integrated stormwater management solutions, incorporate green infrastructure, strengthen climate resilience, and support sustainable urban development objectives.
The course also explores digital technologies, GIS-based flood modeling, smart water management systems, urban ecosystem services, ESG considerations, climate finance opportunities, and international best practices in resilient urban water management. Through case studies, design workshops, simulations, and planning exercises, participants will develop the competencies required to implement effective sponge city programs.
